Did you know that turmeric, a spice used in South Asian cuisine, has countless health benefits? Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, is thought to have numerous effects including, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antioxidant activity.  In Asian cultures, it has been used for centuries as an herbal remedy; and in India, people commonly use it to improves skin’s appearance.  In fact during the Indian wedding, there is ceremony called the “Haldi Ceremony” during which a turmeric paste is applied to the bride and groom to brighten and beautify their skin before the wedding.  It can be used for various skin issues from acne to dark spots and even for antiaging, so try adding some spice to your skin for a glowing complexion!

Simple Turmeric Face Mask
1 teaspoon turmeric
1 teaspoon gram flour (aka chickpea flour)-can substitute with rice flour or finely ground oats
2-3 tablespoons yogurt or milk
I also like to add a few drops of almond oil or rosewater

Mix the ingredients and apply to the face.  Leave on until dry then rinse off using a gentle circular motion.

If you have acne, you may want to add a little honey for an antibacterial boost or sandalwood powder, another natural antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory agent.
