At SmarterSkin Dermatology, Dr. Sejah Shah provides skilled, experienced care to address hair and scalp disorders with the goal of preventing further hair loss and promoting hair rejuvenation.
What Causes Hair Loss?
While it’s normal to lose up to 100 hairs each day, millions of people suffer from hair loss or alopecia. It leaves them with progressively thinning hair, bald patches, and a receding hairline. Whether hair loss is caused by genetic, medical, or environmental factors, it shouldn’t be viewed as a condition that exclusively affects men. Women may also experience hair loss.
Dr. Shah, a specialist in skin, hair, nails, and mucous membrane disorders, assesses hair loss causes through exams and tests. Genetics, stress, medical conditions, or treatments can be responsible. A scalp exam checks for breakage and loss severity. Lab tests might follow. Heredity is common, while sudden loss links to illness, nutrition, meds, diet, or life changes like childbirth and stress.
How Hair Loss Is Different Between Men and Women?
Both men and women commonly experience androgenetic alopecia, also called male and female pattern baldness respectively.
Men hair loss has a defined pattern, starting above the temples and forming an “M” shape as the hairline recedes. Hair also thins on the crown, sometimes leading to complete baldness.
In women, hair becomes uniformly thinner without receding hairlines, and complete baldness is less likely. Signs of female pattern hair loss include daily hair shedding, noticeable thin patches, and visible scalp skin.
What are the Best Hair Loss Treatments?
At SmarterSkin Dermatology, we provide comprehensive care to both stimulate the regrowth of hair and reduce the effects of thinning hair to produce satisfying and aesthetically pleasing results for both men and women.
Dr. Shah’s favorite hair loss treatments include:
- Topical solutions like Minoxidil (Rogaine®)
- Oral medication
- Platelet-rich plasma (PRP)
- Alma TED
Topical Treatments for Hair Loss
Minoxidil is a great way to start on working with an early hair loss. The solution tends to be more effective when used along with other treatments. Since Minoxidil is a topical treatment hence why the application is very easy, and needs to be applied once or twice per day.
For the best achieved results for hair regrowth, you will need to use it every day. If you decide to stop using Minoxidil, you will lose the benefits of it and the progress of your treatment. Usually, to see complete results from the use of the solution it will take 6 to 12 months.
Oral Medications for Hair Loss
The type of oral medication for hair treatment will depend on your hair loss cause, overall health, age and other health conditions. Most used prescriptions are Finasteride (Propecia®) and Spironolactone.
- Finasteride (Propecia®) is FDA approved medication to treat specifically male pattern hair lose. Its’ main attributes include slowing down hair loss and stimulating new hair growth. Even though Finasteride is mostly for males, sometimes providers can prescribe it to a woman who has genetic hair loss and cannot get pregnant. Since this is an oracle medication, it requires taking one pill once a day. As any other treatment it requires time to see any results. Usually, it takes about 4 months to see any improvements.
- Spironolactone helps in treating females with pattern hair loss. It focuses on stopping hair loss progression and rebuilding hair thickness. It is crucial to not get pregnant while taking Spironolactone due to its’ possibility to cause birth defects. Additionally, when patients have an infection or inflammation, a provider can prescribe a medication specifically targeted to treat the issues.
Before starting to take any medication for hair rejuvenation, make sure to discuss possible health risks and side effects with your provider.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP)
can be one of the safest and most effective way to hair rejuvenation. It involves taking a small amount of patient’s blood and placing it into machine that destructs it into several parts. Consequently, the provider injects parts of your plasma into the area of hair loss.
Generally, the procedure takes around 10 minutes and does not require any downtime. However, to achieve the best results, you will need to receive more treatments once a month for 3 months and then once every 3 to 6 months.
TED for Hair Loss
In the world of hair restoration, Alma TED (TransEpidermal Delivery) stands as a revolutionary and non-invasive treatment that addresses hair loss, shedding, and thinning. By harnessing the power of ultrasound-based sound waves and air pressure in conjunction with a specialized Hair Care Formula, TED offers an innovative approach to combat these common hair concerns.
How does TED work?
TED’s mechanism is simple yet effective: it facilitates deeper penetration of the potent hair growth formula into the scalp. Combining sound waves and air pressure enhances blood flow, promotes scalp health, and stimulates hair follicles. The result is hair that not only appears thicker and stronger but is inherently healthier.
Why TED?
What sets Alma TED apart is its remarkable capacity to deliver outstanding hair restoration benefits without the typical discomfort and shedding associated with other in-office hair treatments. It is an ideal option for individuals in the early stages of hair loss who are generally in good health and have not undergone recent steroid treatments. With the ability to improve the penetration of topical hair growth treatments, Alma TED paves the way for more substantial and lasting results in the journey to rejuvenate your hair.
