Among the most common skin conditions seen by dermatologists are rashes. With symptoms that range from blotches, or dry, scaly skin to red and swollen bumps, a collection of blisters or an itchy outbreak, rashes can manifest themselves in many ways and be attributable to any number of underlying causes. As a board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Sejal Shah will review your history and symptoms to determine the source of your rash and provide the care required to alleviate any discomfort and resolve the condition.
Rashes can be triggered by a multitude of contributing factors, including genetics, allergies, medical conditions, medications and exposure to environmental irritants. Moreover, the severity of a rash can also depend on any number of things and may be significantly different from one person to another. Some people, with sensitive skin develop severe and widespread rashes in response to irritants. It’s also worth noting that a rash may seem to emerge out of the blue, appear to come and go, or gradually worsen over time. While some rashes can be easily treated with a topical or oral medication to clear up in a few days, there are those that are indicative of a serious allergic reaction, infection or internal cause that requires prompt medical attention.
To diagnose and treat your rash, Dr. Shah will review your medical history, your symptoms and discuss any factors that may have contributed to its outbreak. How the rash feels as well as how it seems to have developed or changed over time will also be discussed. Depending on the diagnosis, treatment for a rash can be provided in any number of ways including, topical creams, ointments, oral antihistamines, medicated baths and changes in medications or environmental factors such as soaps that may be causing the rash. In some cases, an underlying condition that requires other forms of medical care may be a contributing factor.
